The annual HSLDA art contest is back! This contest is open for students ages 7 to 19 and is a great chance for your child to put their art skills to work. Students are split into age categories and cash prizes are awarded for winners. Here’s what you need to know:

Categories and themes

Category 1: Ages 7-10
Theme: Post-Impressionist Art

Students need to incorporate one of the following elements in their artwork: pointillism, evocative color palette, distinctive brushstrokes, or natural subjects captured. You can view examples of each here.

Category 2: Ages 11-14
Theme: Expressionist Art

Students need to incorporate at least one of the following elements in their artwork: bright color palette, exaggerated subjects, generous paint application, or gestural brushstrokes. You can view examples of each here.

Category 3: Ages 15-19
Theme: Surrealist Art

Students need to incorporate at least one of the following elements in their artwork: symbols used to convey personal meaning, concepts presented in an unusual manner, distorted perspective, or highly imaginative scenarios portrayed.

Prizes

In each category, there will be a 1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place winner along with 2 honorable mentions. Prizes are based on category:

  • Honorable mentions $50

Category 1

  • 1st place $250
  • 2nd place $150

Category 3

  • 1st place $500

There is a fee to enter the art contest. If you’re a member of HSLDA the entry fee is $10/entry. If you’re not a member, the fee is $15/entry. All entries are submitted electronically and then winners are asked to mail framed originals in to be displayed at the HSLDA headquarters in Virginia for the year.

The contest opened on December 1st and all entries need to be postmarked by February 1, 2019. All participants are notified of the winners in March and artwork will be on display beginning in April both on the website and in person.
